Siddhartha Mitter sull'arte di Cauleen Smith

I VISITATORI DELLA BIENNALE DI WHITNEY 2017 ricorderanno gli striscioni. Alti circa un metro e mezzo e larghi quattro, pendevano dal soffitto nell'atrio del museo e nella galleria principale della mostra. Ciascuno presentava, su un lato, un'immagine vistosa come un uccello sanguinante nel cielo o un occhio umano forato da una matita. Dall'altro lato è apparso un testo (per lo più) conflittuale: LA MIA PATOLOGIA È IL TUO PROFITTO; SONO COSÌ NERO CHE TI ACCECO; NON HO PIÙ NULLA. Le parole dure contrastavano con la lussureggiante bellezza di questi oggetti: i colori caldi dipinti su tessuti pregiati, le paillettes e le frange, le frasi ricamate in corsivo che li permeavano di innocenza e immediatezza. E quando un giorno gli stendardi furono portati fuori dal museo per essere portati in processione, fu con il gioioso accompagnamento di spirituals: canti di libertà.

Cauleen Smith potrebbe non essere stata ben nota al grande pubblico, o addirittura a gran parte del mondo dell'arte, prima che i suoi striscioni e la loro sfilata facessero parte della Biennale. Ma nell’avanguardia nera – gli afrofuturisti e gli attivisti della comunità, gli artisti, gli scrittori e i teorici che immaginano modi di vivere che nobilitano se stessi come soggetti neri e come tutta l’umanità – lei è una sorta di eroina per l’ampiezza e la generosità del suo lavoro. Molti la conoscono ancora soprattutto per la sua arte cinematografica, la sua arte originale, che ha studiato alla UCLA all'inizio degli anni '90. Il suo lungometraggio Drylongso (1998) è un classico di culto indipendente nero, lodato dalla critica ma difficile da trovare; da allora ha girato almeno quaranta cortometraggi sperimentali.
